Gumtree not allowing hand sanitiser to be sold on their platform

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I tried to sell hand sanitiser on Gumtree and got this message:

Dear Gumtree User,

Your Ad; Hand sanitizer, [REDACTED], was removed as you’ve posted an ad offering/requesting an item that has been reported by our Gumtree community.

We have been monitoring the community response to the outbreak of COVID-19 in South Africa and are committed to protecting our community against any sensitive ads deemed inappropriate in this context. Based on user feedback, and to curb pricing practices that run counter to the community-minded spirit of Gumtree, we have temporarily banned listings for COVID test kits, and Personal Protective Equipment- including but not limited to health care masks including N95/N100/surgical masks, as well as surgical/latex gloves.

We will continue to monitor the evolving situation and keeping a close eye on government regulations and guidelines to keep our community safe.

If you are planning future Gumtree transactions of this nature, we encourage you to review our COVID-19 Safety Precautions. If you feel that we were unjustified in removing your Ad or have any other questions, please contact us via our Helpdesk.

Thanking you for your cooperation and support,

The Gumtree Team

I see on their website they have an even longer list of conditions:

COVID-19 Trading Guidelines
Guidelines for trading during the Corona-virus crisis:

In light of the President’s address and increasing concern about the spread of the Corona-virus, we are keeping a close eye on government regulations and guidelines to keep our community safe.

We encourage all of our users that do not operate as essential businesses to adhere to the lockdown and not to conclude face-to-face transactions at this time.

The prices of goods listed on Gumtree are set by individual sellers and reflect the supply and demand of a particular product.

Excessive pricing

Unlike online retailers, we do not offer products ourselves, and do not monetize any transactions that take place on our platform. However, we are committed to protecting our community against excessive pricing of products as well as any increased risk of fraud, and therefore we are regulating the price on the sale of face masks, hand gel and several other household items in South Africa.

Our policies

On 9th March we took action to review all ads with keywords related to Coronavirus and potentially profiteering, as well as potential false medical claims. We have not taken an approach to ban entirely as many ads are legitimate, so therefore are reviewing on an ad by ad basis. We will remove ads if they are in conflict with our general terms or the spirit thereof (ads with clear excessive pricing or very clearly untrue health claims such as “virus mask”).

Temporary ban on PPE and COVID-19 kits

Based on user feedback, and to curb pricing practices that run counter to the community-minded spirit of Gumtree, as of April 8th, we have temporarily banned listings for the following items:
Testing kits
Personal Protective Equipment - including but not limited to health care masks including N95/N100/surgical masks, as well as surgical/latex gloves
Masks we allow to be sold on Gumtree:
Reusable/washable cloth masks
Where should I post my mask ad?
If you are selling individual masks - Home and Garden > Other
If you are selling in bulk – Business to Business > Other
Please note that our Online & Essential Services category is only intended for services ads and not the sale of any items.

For more details on the change, click here

Ads extended by an additional 30 days
Existing live ads will automatically be extended for an additional 30 days from its start date
Ads created/reposted between the 25th of March and 20th of April will expire no sooner than the 31st of May (60 days after posting)
For more details on the change, click here

You can help

Please help us to keep an eye out for ads that feature false medical claims or excessive pricing and flag them accordingly by clicking on the Report Ad button on the bottom of ads.

Other than that, it’s business as usual for us. Many of the small businesses using Gumtree depend on the community to keep their doors open and staff employed, which is why we encourage supporting SMEs in a safe and responsible manner.

If you have any concerns or questions, please visit sacoronavirus.co.za, the official Depart of Health website.

If you see anything that concerns you on Gumtree, please contact us at our helpdesk. We will respond within 24 hours.

I don't understand why they doing this, I am selling a quality product at a fair price, hospitals have their own supply chains and procurement channels, and hospitals can post wanted ads if they still need. Also, this means people will find it harder to buy hand sanitiser close to them so they don't have to travel far, it's something they have been advised to use and it will prevent infections (less people ending up in the hospital). Also I have an essentials permit since "Level 5". To think these guys used to run ads saying "Anyone can start a business on Gumtree", bunch of nonsense!.

I see some people have added full stops between letters (same like they use to get around naughty word filters) to get the advert straight through moderation like this: S.a.n.i.t.i.s.e.r :D

You have to remember where Gumtree comes from, it was started by souties for souties, it was never meant to be a general classifieds service like the Cape Ads was and even though they were bought by eBay they still have a soutie mentality. These are the 1%, they come from old money so there isn't really a need to hustle and make money.

You must see Gumtree's list of disallowed goods, a list longer than your arm:

I see they are doing the same with masks, not even medical masks but industrial masks. I think they somehow believe they are helping by not providing a market for PPE during this "pandemic" to what end I don't know, there is enough supply. This doesn't benefit anyone, except Gumtree competitors maybe that's why they are resorting to scamming their advertisers now as business is down due to lower traffic volumes.
